Alchemy is a craft. While many wizards are alchemists, alchemy does not require spellcasting.
Practice
- The elementalists and alchemists of the Idjits can harness electricity to make hybrid creatures. They have weaponised shock lizards and created cloud mantas capable of propelling ships.
- Alchemists discovered the main component of the Scent Barrier in the caverns beneath Jahur. They create the pungent network of geysers that blasts a range of strong smells that makes those reliant on scent disoriented, then half-blind and insane.
- Quicksilver emulsifies certain magical potions, can cause unstable reactions, including twisting people to become silverlings. Some unscrupulous alchemists use silverling body parts in their formulae.
- Jahuri alchemists make blackpowder and fertiliser from the guano of sea birds.
- The alka-lion drips a powerful solvent sought out by alchemists (14.27).
- Master Var has developed a substance from ochre jelly that makes his skin mostly fireproof.
- Jiffon Soon created the geas-eater to remove from himself a powerful curse.
- An opportunistic alchemist captured a mating pair of fire centipedes (17.30).
- Orhan, in happier times, turned lead to gold. He also grew his own wives in vats and had a gnoll sing souls into them. While one of Orhan’s wives had her body shattered in a recent attack, his apprentices have preserved the brain.
Alchemists
- Master Var is “something of” an alchemist.
- Jiffon Soon, an exile of Naros, is a mad alchemist.
- The Idjits
- Viceroy Orhan was chosen as treasurer because of his skill at alchemy.
- There is a gnome alchemist in The Fearless.
- Severard had an alchemy lab.
- Many alchemists now study alongside hexers and astrologers at the Imperial Academy of Thaumaturgy, which once taught wizards and sages.
