Sosaria, the Conjured City

Centuries ago, the archmage Imorcar the Many chose this remote shore of the Keening Sea to found his empire. Legends tell of how he ordered an army of djinn to build the Elephant Wall, which is wide enough to host ostrich races and topped with thousands of protruding elephant tusks. He then conjured the Palace of All Time from the stone beneath the plains and proclaimed himself the Eternal King of Sosaria.
Imorcar still nominally rules the city but Sosaria thrives despite him. The strength of the Elephant Wall protects vast herds of dodos, ostriches and cattle from gnoll hordes. It is believed that these livestock outnumber the citizens by more than ten to one. The sheer amount of dung the animals produce provides enough fertilizer to make the surrounding plains a verdant grazing land. Imorcar the Many proclaims that soon spires, academies and temples will replace the sprawl of reeking stockyards and rickety tenements, and that Sosaria will eclipse Jahur and Shuttered. For now, it is a squalid hive of beasts and men that manages not to fall under anyone’s thrall only because it is remote and unpleasant.
Features of Sosaria
- Imorcar the Many is the founder and Eternal King of Sosaria. He rules from the Palace of All Time.
- Ivory gargoyles made from tusks on the Elephant Wall come alive when they witness law breaking.
- The Trunk is the city’s great slaughterhouse; not a pleasant place and the conflicts that are roiling its workers have not made it any moreso.
- The cattle barons have split into at least two factions.
- In the Bones’ Jangle, skeletons are used as fetching puppets.
- Taheesha is a jackalwere who is currently spying on Sosaria with the help of a hat of disguise and a bad Jahuri accent.
- Sosaria the Brave is the anthem of Sosaria, plagiarised from the anthem of Alexandrine (19.34).
Connections:
- Local gnolls believe that the tusks atop the Elephant Wall were looted from the Graveyard of Painted Elephants (43.27) when they were in truth taken from the elusive moon elephants which are now almost extinct as a result (50.20).
- One of the dangers that Sosarian cattle herders face is jackalweres that can cast a man into slumber with a look (which means that goggles made of dark glass are an important precaution).
- A ship was carrying giant bee honey supplies here to cure meat with but it ran around after being attacked (50.14).
Hooks:
- Who, or what, moves all of that dung out of the city?
- What kind of horrible diseases are born here?
